Fundy FORCE

Canada's leading tidal energy test centre harnessing the Bay of Fundy's powerful currents

Bay of FundyTides

FORCE—the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy—represents humanity's ambitious quest to harness one of nature's most powerful and predictable forces. This camera overlooks the Minas Passage, where the Bay of Fundy's legendary tides squeeze through a narrow channel, accelerating to speeds exceeding 5 metres per second and creating one of the most energetic tidal environments on Earth. The potential is staggering: the energy flowing through this passage twice daily rivals the combined output of thousands of rivers, offering a renewable power source that could help transform how we generate electricity.

Unlike the unpredictable nature of wind or solar energy, tidal power operates with clockwork precision—the moon's gravitational pull ensures the tides arrive on schedule, day after day, century after century. FORCE serves as the proving ground where this potential becomes reality, providing developers from around the world with the infrastructure needed to test cutting-edge tidal turbine technology. Submarine cables carry electricity from test turbines to the provincial power grid, while comprehensive environmental monitoring programs study how marine life—from fish to seabirds to the bay's resident harbour porpoises—interacts with these underwater installations. The research conducted here is shaping the future of ocean energy globally.

The FORCE visitor centre welcomes the public free of charge, offering a front-row seat to this energy revolution. Inside the 3,000-square-foot facility, interactive exhibits and interpretive displays explain the science of tidal energy, the engineering challenges of operating in such an extreme environment, and the environmental research that ensures responsible development. A small theatre hosts presentations and community events, while the observation deck provides sweeping views across the Minas Passage to the dramatic cliffs of Cape Split. Located near the charming town of Parrsboro along the Glooscap Trail, FORCE invites visitors to witness where innovation meets the awesome power of the Bay of Fundy.
